One Face Panel / Cave of 200 Hands

Getting to this painting, which I call One Face Panel, requires going to the far side of the Needles District of Canyonlands. Nearby is a better known Anasazi panel, Cave of 200 Hands. |

With its white outline, feather, and slit eyes, the central figure is similar to some of the Anasazi "Faces Motif" figures found in other areas of Canyonlands. |

A section of the Cave of 200 Hands Panel. I'd heard of this panel for years and I was expecting it to be larger, but it's a fairly small overhang with many muddy colored (red, brown, and pink) handprints and fading figures. The spalling rock is quickly contributing to the deterioration of the panel. |

The handprints are fairly small and my companion was of the impression that a fair amount of them were children's handprints. One can crawl onto the ledge in front and, looking up, see handprints everwhere. |
