Product Type: Web Browser Utility. List Price: $20 Rating: **** out of ***** Test Platform: Micron PC Pentium II 333 with 128 Megabytes RAM and an 8.4 Gigabyte hard drive, partitioned into FAT and NTFS, running NT 4.0 service pack 6a and Netscape 4.7. I tested version 1.04.6 of Cleanup. Version 2, with an improved Graphical User Interface, is promised soon. I followed their directions for the Easy Update. The conclusion was that the installation CD contained the latest version. The Installation took less than 5 minutes. I chose to run the Manual Erase. Internet Cleanup found 1444 Cached files, 470 History Items, 106 Cookies, 0 ActiveX Controls, and 10 Plugins. I started with the Cache. All of the items were marked with a green meter icon as being ’Safe to Remove’. I had selected about 90 items by clicking the Checkbox at each item. Then I got curious and clicked the URL heading bar. Nothing appeared to happen (no Hourglass/Busy Cursor). I clicked around, e.g.: Help & Select All buttons. Eventually the Help window opened. I closed it and noticed that the list of cache items had been sorted by URL with them all selected! This was a much more convenient listing order. I began deselecting Cache Items. Using the down arrow button, to move through the list, and the space bar, to deselect items, worked fine. In less than 5 minutes Internet Cleanup erased 1039 cache items, freeing up 7.5 Meg of disk space. Next I tried Cookie Erase. Internet Cleanup found 106, all marked with the yellow ‘Remove with Caution’ icon. I selected 61 to be erased. But, it displayed the message: ‘Unable to Shred’. I could find no pertinent information in the Online Help or in the booklet. The next day I noticed that there were 46 Cookies. My guess is that almost all of selected Cookies were erased on shut down or on reboot. Internet Cleanup found 470 History items (all of them ‘Safe to Remove’). I selected 158 to be erased. Internet Cleanup shredded 155 of these. Three History Items could not be shredded. Two of these were created by Microsoft. Internet Cleanup found no ActiveX Controls, because I do not use Internet Explorer. There were 10 Plugins from Netscape, but I left them all. In an hour and ten minutes, Internet Cleanup freed up close to 8 Megabytes of my hard drive space. The next time I may have it shred all of the Cached files. There are still 406 left, tying up 2.2 Megabytes. Most of these are graphics files. With this version, I will stick to Manual Erase. I look forward to the next version which I will feel more confident about using the Auto-Erase Settings.
