Nine Mile Canyon

Fremont Style Owl

Nine Mile Canyon features some of the best Fremont Indian rock art in the southwest, with a large number of fine petroglyph panels. One of the nicest images is this superb owl, which is about three feet tall.

Nine Mile Canyon, Fremont Rock Art, Hunter Scene Panel

The famous Hunting Scene panel. Note the hunters with bows and arrows, the horned shamanic figure at the top, and the shield figure in the middle of all the bighorn sheep. This panel may have been created to bring good luck on the hunt.

Northern San Rafael style Fremont pictograph

A classic Northern San Rafael style Fremont petroglyph. This trapezoidal shaped anthropomorphic figure wearing an antler headdress and kilt-like skirt is seen in numerous areas of Nine Mile Canyon. It is likely that the Fremont art here was created between A.D. 1000 to 1200. The hole in his chest is most likely from a bullet. There are many panels here but few are vandalized.
