Author's Rant & Lament

The 01 portion of the Cliff Canyon web site was initially formed to promote the Korg 01/W Percussion Manual, a book no musical outlet would carry because "the 01 is dead". From a merchant's point of view, there is more money to be made selling new synths and related gear. Owners of "dead" gear are more likely to buy new stuff when they can't get support or information on their trusted "oldy".

This, of course, is a shame. I don't believe 40,000 01/W owners (a sales figure I got from Korg) should be abandoned just because merchants want to sell a new flavor. It's a waste of resources, materials, and the time we invested in learning. If your instrument is inspiring music you love, why on earth would you sell it for a new shiny?

Hence, this web site. Since no magazine would review or even mention this book, few 01/W users know it exists. Since no mail-order catalog would carry this book, it's hard to get. This book may not be right for you, but you should have the choice. This site is a way for you to learn about the book, ask questions, and decide if it would benefit you.

The great thing about a web site, though, is that it's much more than an ad! I can answer questions in depth, revising the information instantly when I get feedback. I can "publish" new discoveries and techniques as soon as I find them. I can use color and diagrams without worrying about printing processes. Plus I get to learn HTML (and that's a plus?).

So, this site is really an experiment in concurrent publishing - the old alongside the new. We're pushing a printed book while creating an electronic one. I don't know where it's all going, but for the moment, I like this journey of learning. In the process, I hope visitors can learn as well.

Enjoy the site!
