LCD Contrast
Values Default Power Off Reset
1-8 3 stored default
Changes the angle at which the display looks darkest.

Effect (ON/OFF) [available with ROM #62 only?]
ON = VALUE UP pressed once, or VALUE Slider slid all the way up.
OFF = VALUE DOWN pressed once, or VALUE Slider slid all the way down.

This is a "master switch" for turning effects on and off. No matter what mode you're in, you can turn off all effects by setting this parameter to "OFF". It turns off all effects in all modes. Effect always powers-up "ON". This parameter is NOT sent as part of a MIDI Global Dump.

Master Tune (-50 cents though +50 cents)
Lets you change the tuning of the 01 to match other instruments. There are 100 cents in 1 half-step, so you can vary the tuning up or down half a note. (1 half-step = 1 key on keyboard = 1 note)
MIDI IN: Master Tune can be set using the RPN Master Tune Controller #100,101/64h65h.
MIDI OUT: Master Tune does not output any MIDI data.

Key Transpose (-12 steps through +12 steps)
Lets you change the key of the 01 up or down one octave.
Note: The manual uses the term "step" here, meaning "chromatic step" which is actually a half-step, or one note.
MIDI IN: Key Transpose has no effect on received MIDI data.
MIDI OUT: Key Transpose will have an effect on MIDI output data.
Sequencer Recording: Transposed keys will be recorded.
Sequencer Playback: Key Transpose has no effect during playback.

MIDI ("Global") Channel
Values Default Power Off Reset
1-16 1 stored default
Sets the Global MIDI channel. There are times when the 01 must look like a single MIDI instrument with a single MIDI address (channel). This address/channel is called its "Global" channel.

Global Channel Usage
System Exclusive All SysEx messages are sent/received on the Global channel.
Program Mode All musical data is sent/received on the Global channel.
Combination Mode Combination changes are made on the Global channel. (Individual Timbre/Progs are controlled on the MIDI channel specified in EDIT COMBI.)
Sequencer Mode All SysEx messages travel on the Global channel.
Individual Progs/Patches communicate on the channel specified in the sequence.

Clock Source
Values Default Power Off Reset
EXT / INT INT INT INT
To select EXT, press VALUE UP once, or move VALUE Slider all the way up.
To select INT, press VALUE DOWN once, or move VALUE Slider all the way down.

Sets MIDI clock source. This setting directly changes the "Tempo" setting in SEQuence Mode, Page 0, bottom line. Setting this to EXT lets the Sequencer be clocked by an external "master" MIDI device, like a computer-based sequencer.

Local Control (ON/OFF)
To select ON, press VALUE UP once, or move VALUE Slider all the way up.
To select OFF, press VALUE DOWN once, or move VALUE Slider all the way down.
Local Mode is always set to ON when you turn the power on (the setting is not remembered when you turn off the power).

Local Mode must be "ON" if you want to hear the 01 when you play the keyboard by itself (not attached to a computer).

The 01 is really two devices in one cabinet:

a Keyboard Controller (the black and white keys you press) and
a Sound Module (contains Sounds, Progs, and Combis, similar to the 01R/W)

When you play the Controller (keys), MIDI messages are sent out the MIDI Out connector.
The Sound Module responds to MIDI messages coming in the MIDI In connector.

In order for the keys to make sound, you must connect the Controller MIDI Out to the Sound Module MIDI In. "Local Mode" makes this connection internally so you don't have to use a cable (from the 01's MIDI Out to its own MIDI In). When Local Mode is ON the connection is made. When Local Mode is OFF, the keys are disconnected from the Sound Module, and you will hear nothing.

You can prove this by connecting the 01's MIDI Out to the MIDI In with a MIDI cable. Go to Global Mode Page 0 and toggle Local Mode between OFF and ON - you'll always hear something because the cable is bypassing the internal connection. If you disconnect the cable and toggle Local Mode, you will hear nothing when Local Mode is OFF.

In other words, Local Mode is simply a MIDI cable.

External Controllers
Set Local Mode OFF to disconnect the internal Keyboard Controller from the Sound Module. Now you can connect a totally different Keyboard (a "Controller" with a MIDI OUT output) to the 01 MIDI IN, yet still use the same Sound Module. One Keyboard Controller can play also multiple Sound Modules.

This is the same way a computer-based sequencer is connected to the 01. If you don't disconnect the 01 Keyboard (that is, if you leave Local ON), then the Sound Module gets messages from both sources (the Keyboard keys AND notes coming from the computer), resulting in weird sounding notes at times.

If you set Local OFF, you will hear nothing when you play the keyboard unless the external sequencer is "echoing" those key hits back to the 01. That is, when you hit a key, a MIDI "Note On" message goes out the MIDI OUT connector to the sequencer's MIDI IN, which then sends that same message out its MIDI OUT, back to the 01's MIDI IN, which is connected to the Sound Module, which then plays the note.

Note Receive (ALL/ODD/EVEN)
Used when connecting two 01s. Leave set to ALL otherwise. This is always set to ALL when you turn the power on (that is, the setting is not remembered when you turn off the power).

Note Receive is a MIDI IN data filter. When set to EVEN, only notes with an even MIDI note number will sound. When set to ODD, only odd MIDI note numbers will sound. MIDI OUT data is not affected. When connecting two 01s with a MIDI cable, set one 01 to EVEN and the other to ODD. This increases your polyphony from 32 notes to 64 notes. (This will not increase the number of Progs you can play at one time.)

MIDI Filters
The 01 can send and receive MIDI messages. The following filters let you select which messages the 01 will or will not send/receive. When using the sequencer, these messages will be filtered during recording, not during playback.

Factory defaults (settings when you Initialize ["Pre-Load"] your 01) are shown as a bold option.
The factory defaults are: PROG, AFTT, CTRL = ENA. EXCL = DIS.

PROG (Prog/Combi Change Filter)

Option To Select, Function
NUM move VALUE Slider all the way up Program Change messages will select Combis (not Progs). Bank Change messages are ignored.
PRG press VALUE DOWN once after moving VALUE Slider all the way up Program Change and Bank Change messages
will select Progs within the Combi.
ENA press VALUE UP once after moving VALUE Slider all the way down Program Change and Bank Change messages
will select Combis (not Progs).
DIS move VALUE Slider all the way down Program Change and Bank Change messages
will NOT be sent or received.

AFTT (Aftertouch Filter)
Option To select, Function
ENA press VALUE UP once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way up.
MIDI Channel Aftertouch messages
will be sent and received.
DIS press VALUE DOWN once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way down.
MIDI Channel Aftertouch  messages
will NOT be sent or received.
When using the 01's sequencer, you can save a lot of memory by DISabling aftertouch.

CTRL (Control Change Filter)

Option To select, Function
ENA press VALUE UP once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way up.
MIDI Control Change messages
will be sent and received.
DIS press VALUE DOWN once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way down.
MIDI Control Change messages
will NOT be sent or received.
EXCL (System Exclusive Filter)
Option To select, Function
ENA press VALUE UP once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way up.
MIDI Control Change messages
will be sent and received.
DIS press VALUE DOWN once,
or move VALUE Slider all the way down.
MIDI Control Change messages
will NOT be sent or received.

When you reset your 01 to factory defaults, EXCL is DISabled. If you want to send SysEx messages from your computer-based sequencer to the 01 (to change the effects settings, for example), this must be set to ENA.

For some reason, pre-loading Combis and Progs from ROM (GLOBAL Mode, Page 7, Line 1) changes this setting to DIS. Don't forget to change this back to ENA if you plan to receive SysEx messages.
