1. Check things out is using E-bay (http://www.ebay.com). You can see what's available and for how much. It is currently the most popular way to get 01s and related gear (like PCM cards).
2. Post a question on the korg01 mail list (Click here to learn how to subscribe.)
3. Post a question at Synthzone (http://www.synthzone.com), which seems to get a fair number of questions about where to get gear and what's a fair price.
4. Check http://www.harmonycentral.com.
5. Check http://www.hickeys.com for both new and used gear including PCM cards.
6. Talk to local music stores. Once they realize they can't talk you into buying something new, they may admit they know someone who knows someone.
7. If the music store has a bulletin board, post a "Korg Wanted" ad.
8. Local papers (commercial and/or freebies) can also be helpful.

• Things that wear out with time, regardless of use:
1. Make sure the display is working, including the backlight, which tends to wear out [get dimmer and dimmer] in older 01s.
2. Test if the internal battery is dead. (Make an edit, turn power off, then on - check if your edit is still there.)
• Smoky environments really foul up mechanical linkages and electrical contacts (physical evidence of what it does to human lungs, skin, etc.), so:
1. Check all the keys on the keyboard. Older 01s are well known for sticky keys. These can be fixed if you have the time (click here see details on Sticky Keys).
2. Push every button on the front panel and make sure it works without extra pressure or wiggling. Watch the display to make sure things change when you push buttons.
3. Move the VALUE slider and see that values change smoothly. Jerky changes suggest the slider is dirty or worn.
4. If you plan to use PCM or PROG/SEQ cards, test them in the card slots. Smoke and harsh atmoshperes (like ocean air) can make these contacts dirty.
5. Test the MIDI connections - make sure IN and OUT work, at least.
• Audio Checks [have headphones and a mono (male) to stereo (female) adapter ready]
1. Test the headphone output. Move the Volume control through its entire range, listening for scratchy break-up (from dirty contacts)
2. Put the mono/stereo adapter on the headphones. Test each of the four audio outputs on the back panel (1, 2, 3, 4).
• Other checks
1. It would be useful to test both the Assignable Pedal inputs and the Damper input (there is no Damper input on the 01R/W).
2. Ask for the manual and any documentation the previous owner may have acquired.
3. The 01R/W originally came with rack mount adapters. Ask for them.
4. Ask for any disks, PCM cards, or PROG/SEQ cards to be included in the deal.
5. Don't forget to take the power cord. It's detachable and easily forgotten in the excitement of taking your "new" 01 home.

It helps to have the seller print his name as well, especially if the handwriting is, um, artistic.
